Over the past couple of years, it feels like the health industry is putting lots of attention to Superfoods, adding it to protein-bars, ready-to-eat foods (think chia puddings), chocolate-covered açai berries, coconut water flavored pineapple (seriously). The business is so focused on creating new "super" products everyday but it's sad to notice they're losing sight of the whole point! For sure, some of these "healthy" options might not be as bad as eating a sugar laden bar of Snickers, but honestly sugar is sugar and nothing will ever compare to the goodness found in eating clean, unprocessed foods.
So, let's start. Superfoods are a special category of foods found in nature. By definition, they are calorie sparse and nutrient dense meaning they pack a lot of punch for their weight as far as goodness goes. They are superior sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients – nutrients we need but cannot make ourselves, sounds like magic right?
We all may be eating more greens and vegetables, but concern stills exists over the quality of foods grown on mineral depleted soils... which makes consuming Superfoods a smart move. There are 5 different groups of these: Green Superfoods, Fruit & Nut Superfoods, Bee Superfoods, Seaweed Superfoods, and Herb Superfoods.
Stay tuned over the next days to learn about their benefits, which are the ones that I consume on a daily basis and of course, my favourite brands : )
